About
the artists:
As a founding member of De Tijd, Ivo van Hove developed an eclectic
repertory mixing both classic and neglected texts. In 1990, he became
the artistic director of Het Zuildelijk Toneel which, under his leadership,
quickly became one of the Netherlands’s most prominent national
repertory companies. Ivo van Hove is also noted for staging texts from
outside the theater, such as film scripts and opera librettos. Major
recent international productions include stagings of John Cassavetes’s
film Faces and Marguerite Duras’s India Song. For New York Theatre
Workshop, Ivo van Hove directed Eugene O’Neill’s seldom
seen More Stately Mansions (OBIE award for direction), Tennessee Williams’s
A Streetcar Named Desire, and Susan Sontag’s Alice in Bed. Ivo
van Hove led the Holland Festival for several years and is currently
the artistic director of Toneelgroep Amsterdam
The cast is shaping up for the New York Theater Workshop production Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler. In addition to previously announced star Elizabeth Marvel, the play will feature Elzbieta Czyzewska as Berte, Jason Butler Harner as George Tesman, Mary Beth Peil as Julia Tesman, Ana Reeder as Thea Elvsted and John Douglas Thompson as Judge Brack.
Czyzewska is an NYTW alum, having appeared in the company's production of Vienna: Lusthaus (revisited). Harner is currently appearing as Tom in the Kennedy Center production of The Glass Menagerie. Peil earned a 1985 Tony Award nomination for her work in The King and I and also appeared on the Great White Way in Nine. Reeder recently made her Broadway debut in Sight Unseen. Thompson's theatrical credits include Othello, Mother Courage, Antigone and To Kill a Mockingbird.
Hedda Gabler is the story of the newlywed Hedda Tesman (Marvel) who finds herself bored with married life to her scholar husband, George Tesman (Harner). As the daughter of General Gabler, she had grown accustomed to the freedom and exciting social world of her father's home. When her rival, Mrs. Elvsted (Reeder), reenters her life with Hedda's former lover, Eilert Lovberg in tow, Hedda sets out on a shocking path of destruction that affects the lives of everyone around her.
This Hedda Gabler, directed by Ivo van Hove, will run downtown from September 10 through October 24.
